Will new Beijing airport become world’s busiest?

NEW DELHI: Construction of Beijing’s new Daxing International Airport was officially completed on June 30 and is set to be inaugurated on September 30, the eve of the 70th anniversary of PR China’s founding. With Beijing’s only airport under immense pressure and constantly plagued by delays, China has invested billions in the new facility, which could well become the world’s biggest airport by passenger traffic.
DAXING COMPLETED IN ONLY FOUR YEARS
The current international airport in Beijing is struggling to handle the millions of passengers who pass through its terminals every year. It’s the second largest airport in terms of passenger traffic, after the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in the US. In 2018, Beijing’s current airport received a whopping 101 million passengers against its maximum capacity of 85 million.
China’s on track to surpass US and become the largest aviation market in the 2020s even though a billion Chinese have to date never flown on an airplane. In 2018, Chinese airports handled 1.26 billion passengers.

Unlike in most airports, standing on Daxing’s fifth floor offers a view of passengers who’ve walked beyond security, giving families and friends another chance to see off passengers.
