Weight loss story: “I lost 14 kilos because I wanted everyone to know that my weight doesn’t define me!”

As the extra kilos piled on, 32-year-old Nupur Luthra was tired with the way she was leading her life. In addition to the lethargy and exhaustion that came with being overweight, she was also done with society’s body-shaming. When she finally decided to get healthy and fit, there was no looking back. Read her story to know how she got back in shape in just 9 months, without any quick fixes or fad diet.

Duration it took me to lose weight: 9 months

The turning point: There were several red flags, I did not pay any attention to before. From being breathless after climbing a flight of stairs to getting tired easily, I was battling all the typical signs of being overweight. However, what really got me in action were the unsolicited comments and body shaming. Even my father told me that I looked horrible with all that weight and that was the time I decided to get back in shape.


My breakfast:
Ragi cheela or a glass of milk with any seasonal fruit

My lunch: A portion of vegetables and 2 chapatis


My dinner:
A bowl of soup or a portion of chicken


Pre-workout meal: I
have seasonal fruits


Post-workout meal:
A cup of tea and one fruit


I indulge in:
I absolutely love gorging on peanut butter sandwich

My workout: My workout routine is completely balanced. I make it a point to do both hardcore cardio and weight training.

Low-calorie recipes I swear by: I vouch on tandoori chicken and freshly-made salad

Fitness secrets I unveiled: No matter what happens, I ensure that I work out for at least an hour daily. Also, as I mentioned before, balance is everything. So make sure that everything right from your workout to your diet is balanced.

How do I stay motivated? I am a fitness addict and I really like working out. This in itself is enough to keep me motivated to keep going.

How do you ensure you don’t lose focus? Since I immensely enjoy working out, I keep on looking for new and innovative ways to burn calories and stay in shape. It really helps me stay focused.

What’s the most difficult part of being overweight? While there were a lot of things which made my life really difficult, the inability to climb a flight of staircase without losing my breath definitely topped it. I realised that I needed to work hard to shed those extra kilos.

What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line? In the years to come, I want to be toned, slim and healthy.


What are the lifestyle changes you made?
There were two simple lifestyle changes that I followed very strictly. First of all, I shunned all the unhealthy food items and secondly, I made sure to exercise regularly.


What was the lowest point for you?
It was really heartbreaking when my own father told me that I looked horrible with all those extra kilos. I was shattered, to say the least.

Lessons learnt from weight loss: I have realised that once you start working out, you fall in love with the concept of being healthy and fit. I had become a happier person ever since I started my weight loss journey and there was no looking back after that.
