Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is planning to play three central defenders for Manchester United’s clash with Tottenham on Wednesday evening, according to reports.

Solskjaer has experimented with that system already this season and has received mixed results.

In the 3-3 draw against Sheffield United 10 days ago, Solskjaer started with a three-man defence but was forced to abandon that at half-time following a woeful performance in the opening 45 minutes.

United also played with a back three for their 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Old Trafford in October.

According to The Sun, Solskjaer is looking to play Axel Tuanzebe alongside Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire as part of a three-man defence against Tottenham.

The report claims that both Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Ashley Young would then be deployed as wing-backs.

Solskjaer has acknowledged United’s leaky defence in recent weeks with his side conceding six goals in their last three league matches.

Reports are also claiming that Solskjaer could be forced into a change as Anthony Martial is set to miss the game through injury.

The French forward went straight down the tunnel after he was substituted in the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa on Sunday and is reportedly struggling to recover from a muscular problem.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho returns to Old Trafford as a manager for the first time since he was sacked by United last December.

Mourinho, who replaced Mauricio Pochettino as Tottenham manager last month, has won both of his Premier League games with Spurs so far.
