The path for a Boomers gold medal has become that bit easier, after France sensationally bundled the USA out of the FIBA World Cup in a pulsating quarter-final, putting the foot down in the fourth quarter to win 89-79.
It was a disaster night for the NBA-packed United States, who struggled to find any offensive momentum outside of Utah Jazz star, who totalled 29 points.
France, who were beaten late by The Boomers last start, rode the impressive outings of NBA duo Rudy Gobert and Evan Fournier, who combined for 43 points to pace the French unit.
Gobert was outstanding in particular, pulling down 16 rebounds, and coming up with three blocks, including one late in the fourth quarter on Jazz teammate Mitchell.
What does this mean for The Boomers?
France now advance through to a very winnable semi-final against Argentina, who were themselves impressive in toppling Serbia yesterday evening.
If they win that, they will advance to the gold medal game, a game that The Boomers will meet them in with wins tonight and on Friday.
The USA will now play in the 5th-8th placed classification games.
