Jurgen Klopp says Man United only ever defend against Liverpool and takes aim at VAR

Jurgen Klopp aimed a dig at Manchester United’s tactics following Liverpool’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, claiming they only ever adopt a defensive approach against his side.

United blocked Liverpool’s winning run, which had stood at 17 matches, and came close to inflicting a first defeat of the season on the Premier League leaders – with Adam Lallana cancelling out Marcus Rashford’s opener five minutes from time.

Klopp has never beaten United on their own soil but suggested that was down to the negative style of their hosts.

He said: “Whoever said before the game that this game is always built up like a mountain and stuff like that and then we come here and they only have to defend.

“So one day I will really wait for the day when they have to make the game against us and we defend – and let’s see how that is.

“Since I’ve been in England it’s pretty much been like that. We come here put it all together, attitude, tactical defensive shapes.

“Eight players defending, with the quality of Man United, it’s not easy. We expect to play much better than we did today.”

Klopp also hit out at VAR, with the German let outraged when Manchester United’s goal stood despite Divock Origi, filling in for the injured Mohamed Salah, appearing to be fouled by Victor Lindelof in the build up.

Klopp is convinced referee Martin Atkinson ‘knew it was not right’ when VAR did not rule out Rashford’s goal.

He told talkSPORT: “Obviously we’ve spoken a lot about the technology, but it’s not the technology that makes the mistake because we had three camera angles.

“It’s then the human being and I don’t blame Mr Atkinson because he let the situation run because we have VAR.

“You saw it in his face, he let the game go because we have VAR so you don’t have to whistle it back.

“They scored the goal immediately after. He knew it was not right, and then the VAR says it’s not [a] clear and obvious [mistake].

“This is a general thing, and it’s not just with Liverpool or Manchester United, that needs to be sorted.”
