In a rain-curtailed nine overs a side game, India Women held their nerve to overcome West Indies Women by a mere five runs to take a 4-0 lead in the five-match T20I series in Guyana. West Indies ended up with 45 in pursuit of 51.
After a considerable delay due to persistent rain, the match started at 4 PM Atlantic Standard Time. West Indies won the toss and elected to field. The home side’s decision to bowl first was vindicated with India losing wickets at regular intervals as they slid to a precarious 32 for 6 in the seventh over. Afy Fletcher, the legspinner, was the star performer, returning figures of 2 for 2 from two overs. India’s sorry tale was evidenced by the fact that only Pooja Vastrakar (10 runs) reached double figures. Meanwhile, Hayley Mathews bagged three wickets for the hosts.
In their chase, West Indies started on a cautious note, with the score reading 31 for 2 after seven overs. Radha Yadav then dismissed Chinelle Henry for 11 to peg the home side back. To make matters worse, Anuja Patil followed it up by bowling a tight final over and took the wicket of Sheneta Grimmond, with Natasha McLean (10) getting run out. Eventually, despite losing only five wickets, the Caribbean side slipped to another defeat. Deepti Sharma and Yadav snared a wicket each while Patil finished with two scalps.
The final game of the five-match T20I series will be played at the same Providence Stadium, Guyana on Wednesday (November 20).
Brief scores: India Women 50/7 in 9 overs (Pooja Vastrakar 10; Hayley Matthews 3-13) beat West Indies Women 45/5 in 9 overs (Hayley Matthews 11, Chinelle Henry 11; Anuja Patil 2-8) by five runs.
