Groom wakes up with amnesia after Bali buck’s party motorbike crash

After five weeks in a coma following a horror moped accident while celebrating his buck’s weekend in Bali, Cairns man Ashley Hickman has woken up in hospital with amnesia.

The 32-year-old suffered extensive injuries — including a fractured skull — after the moped he was riding crashed just days before his wedding day.

Despite wearing a helmet at the time, Mr Hickman’s insurance failed to cover the accident because he rode the moped without an international driver’s licence.

As a result, his devastated fiancee Tam Matthews and his heartbroken family scrambled to find the money to cover his medical costs, which exceeded more than $50,000.

After the doctors were satisfied with Mr Hickman’s condition and cleared him as fit to fly, he was relocated to Perth Royal Hospital where he has remained until now.

In a post on GoFundMe, Mr Hickman’s sister Brooke announced her brother had woken from his coma and had since been placed into intensive rehabilitation.

“He is slowly progressing and is now in the post-traumatic amnesia stage and has a long journey ahead,” the post read.

“His fiancee Tam is in the process of relocating to Perth to stay by his side. As Ashley gets stronger we are going to reunite him with his beloved dog Chico to assist with his therapy.”

At the time of Mr Hickman’s accident, Ms Matthews was trying on her wedding dress when she received the horror call about her husband-to-be.

“It happened so quickly and I think I held it together quite well from finding out until I arrived,” Ms Matthews told news.com.au at the time of the accident.

“Just seeing him look like that it was the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Ashley is such a lively, funny, energetic, loud person and it looked like he wasn’t in there. He didn’t look like Ashley.”
