Cyclone Bulbul: Schools to remain shut in 9 coastal district as Odisha braces for storm

While the Indian Metrological Department’s latest bulletin forecasts that Cyclone Bulbul would wing up towards West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts, the model of Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) predicts that Cyclone Bulbul will make landfall between North Odisha and West Bengal.

The wind speed and rainfall will gradually increase from Friday afternoon onwards as cyclonic storm Bulbul has intensified into a very severe cyclonic.

Under its influence, intense rainfall activity will begin from the evening of November 8, while heavy rainfall will occur at isolated places in Balasore, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Bhadrak districts on November 9.

Gale wind speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph is very likely from around noon of November 9 for the subsequent 12 hours and decrease thereafter.

On November 10, heavy rainfall will occur at isolated places in Cuttack, Jajpur and Mayurbhanj districts while heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts, Odisha will witness rains till November 13, especially coastal and northern Odisha.

Sea condition will be rough to very rough along and off Odisha and West Bengal coasts from November 8 onwards, becoming high to very high on November 9 and 10.

Schools across nine coastal districts in Odisha have been ordered to remain closed. The residents in these districts have been cautioned against venturing out of their homes and advised to take shelter at safe places during the storm.

NDRF and ODRAF teams have been deployed in districts likely to be affected for relief and rescue operations. Besides, the district collectors of nine districts have been asked to remain alert and keep cyclone shelters ready with all required arrangements.
