A man who broke into a north Queensland police station armed with a knife and chain is in a serious condition after being shot by the officers inside, police say.
The 35-year-old man broke into the police station at Bowen, in the Whitsundays Region, at 2.30pm on Wednesday.
Acting superintendent Ian Haughton said officers tried using their Tasers before shots were fired.
The man was hit in the abdomen and hand, and was flown to Townsville Hospital in a serious condition.
The police ethical standards unit is investigating the incident.
It comes a week after Sydney bodybuilder Daniel King, 32, was shot by police after opening fire on a house and in the vicinity of two police stations in the city’s west. King’s former lover, Stacey Taylor said she had reported his previous threats to police.
Queensland Supt Haughton said police knew little about the man.
“The motivations of this person to do this today have not yet been established and will form a part of the investigation,” he told reporters on Wednesday.
