Austria’s Thiem stretches Davis Cup winning streak

Dominic Thiem extended his Davis Cup singles winning streak to nine when he helped Austria split two matches against Finland in a Group 1 tie on Friday at Espoo, Finland.

Thiem recorded a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Patrik Niklas-Salminen in a 96-minute match. Niklas-Salminen recorded eight aces to Thiem’s five.

Thiem, ranked No. 5 in the world, said he is feeling better. He pulled out of the Cincinnati ATP tour stop in mid-August due to a virus and was dispatched in the first round of the U.S. Open by Italy’s Thomas Fabbiano later in the month.

“I just need to get my match fitness back, and my timing on court,” Thiem said afterward. “Matches like this one here are perfect and every win helps.”

Finland earned its point when Emil Ruusuvuori recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sebastian Ofner.

Ruusuvuori is scheduled to face Thiem on Saturday.

The winning team advances to February’s Davis Cup qualifiers.
