Ander Herrera says football is ‘not most important thing’ at Manchester United

Ander Herrera has questioned the priorities of Manchester United, claiming football is not the most important thing at the club.

The Spanish midfielder left United at the end of the his contract last summer and linked up with Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.

Herrera was a hugely popular figure in his five years at United, but feels the club has lost focus of what really matters.

‘I was very happy at that incredible club. I am very grateful to the supporters,’ Herrera said.

‘Frankly, I was immensely happy in Manchester, but at the club, there were times when I felt that football was not considered the most important thing.’

Asked if turning a profit was the most important thing at United, Herrera replied: ‘That does not come out of my mouth.

‘I don’t know, but football was not the most important thing in Manchester.

‘I do not want to compare, all I know is that here, I feel like I’m breathing football on all sides. And I like it.’

Herrera left United after failing to come to terms over a new deal, accusing the board of dragging their feet in talks.

United chief Ed Woodward has faced a steady stream of criticism in recent years, with Gary Neville calling for his sacking earlier this season.

The Red Devils have suffered a drastic downturn in results since 2013 and current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is facing an uphill battle to turn results around.

United play Brighton at the weekend in their final game before club action is put on hold for the two-week international break.
